Note that this book is undated and the date is estimated based on the years the publisher was in business. The exact publication date is unknown, but It is prior to 1900. This is likely the First Edition or near to it.

A lot of her books are marked First edition, but when you do the research on the publishing companies, they are clearly not First Editions. I can't guarantee these are, but they are a collectors dream. The name changed, around 1880, to Donohue & Henneberry.

Around 1900 Michael Donohue and William Henneberry split the firm. As a result, these books were published between 1880 to 1900. You can look everywhere, but you won't find another matching leather-bound 1890s set of "Edna Lyall's Works" like this one. And if you did manage to find one at an obscure antiquarian bookseller somewhere, it would be priced at triple what I'm asking for the set! Edna Lyall (whose real name was Ada Ellen Bayly) lived from 1857 to 1903, and was an English novelist and pioneer women's suffrage advocate.

This set of her works includes the titles "Knight-Errant, " "We Two, " "Donovan, " "A Hardy Norseman, " and Won By Waiting. These books are bound in embossed brown leather.

Slight rubbing and shelf wear. Slight spoiled page edges, marbled but faded. Interior pages very lightly toned, free from annotations, foxing, library marks, nameplates, general pen or pencil marks, stains, and losses. I did find one very tiny quarter inch tear on one page and one book has the first book page coming off from a slight crack in the spine. These books were extremely well preserved. Overall a NEAR FINE (and extremely rare) set for the age. These books would make an exceptional addition to your antique book collection, or would be a perfect gift for a friend who loves English novels, history, or who is redecorating a room and looking for a signature piece.
