The Illuminated Titles, Vignettes, Initials, Borders, and Ornaments, are designed by Owen Jones, Architect. Owen Jones (15 February 1809 19 April 1874) was an English-born Welsh architect. A versatile architect and designer, he was also one of the most influential design theorists of the nineteenth century. He helped pioneer modern colour theory, and his theories on flat patterning and ornament still resonate with contemporary designers today. Jones used his printing press to enter the lucrative market for illustrated and illuminated gift books which were becoming increasingly popular with the Victorian middle class. There are some signs of age, use and wear. The sturdy tough brown leather hard cover has some visible surface wear and fading. The spine appears to have been professionally repaired/replaced. Despite the visual wear the cover remains very strong and sturdy. There is some occasional age related page discolouration/creasing dotted throughout, brown spotting/foxing typical with age. All text is clearly legible. Overall the text block binding appears strong, tight and complete. There are several previous owner inscriptions on the front end paper. The page edges are gold gilded and also show some fading.

Evidence of ribbon page markers, in poor condition. Overall the book remains in good reading condition, fascinating edition with Numerous intricate details, a very scarce find, with as described clear signs of age, use and wear.
