ANOTHER REMARKABLE ANTIQUE TREASURE FROM MY PERSONAL ANTIQUECOLLECTION 2020. OFFERED TODAY IS THIS REMARKABLE AND INTUITIVE CIRCA LATE 19. CENTURY TROMPE LOIEL BOOK PILE DESIGN JEWELLERY/VALUABLE HIDING BOX. This is a lovely very rare circa late 19. Century Trompe loiel (fool of the eye) jewellery hiding box designed as a pile of leather bound books.

Used as a hiding place for valuables from would be thieves and fitted in between library books on book shelves so as to be indistinguishable from a normal book display in the Masters library. It is a fantastic well-made box using outer leather bindings from real books of the period over a wooden carcass with a hollowed out interior for hiding valuables inside. Notice that the bottom book is upside down so that it would look like just a stack of books if not in a bookshelf but if stacked in a book shelf it could be found easily by looking for an upside down book! The piece shows lots of lovely age related wear and tear.

It has a hinged top and the hinge is in excellent condition and is working as it should. The wooden inside cover fits well.

It is a very well made item. A TRULY RARE AND COLLECTIBLE ANTIQUE WHICH I HAVE TO LET GO OF AS WE ARE DOWNSIZING MY COLLECTION DUE TO UNCERTAIN TIMES.
