Personally inscribed by Grant's Vice President Henry Wilson To Secretary of State James Blaine. Henry Wilson was a leading abolitionist and wrote this classic book on the rise and fall of slavery just at the end of the Civil War. This was the first volume of three. Features James Blaine's original bookplate laid inside. He was often referred to as "magnegic man, " for his charismatic speeches. Blaine was a key supporter of Lincoln and served as Secretary of State to President James A. A pretty cool association of two lesser known albeit important and influential historical figures.

The book itself has some wear from age with weak hinges, a delicate and loosening spine with some chipping/fraying and some water damage to the back. Pages look good inside with light wear considering its age. See pictures for a closer look!
