From History Never Repeats LLC, Charleston, WV. Book end table model K-5184, Vladimir Kagan Dreyfuss, 1950s, NY, NY. For Grosfeld House Showrooms Oiled Black American walnut, polished steel Measures: 26 inch diameter x 21.5 inches tall. A very rare circular table by Vladimir Kagan custom made for the showroom at the Grosfeld House circa 1957. This piece has a welded and polished steel base with a circular walnut table top featuring an open bookcase or shelf space on opposing sides.
The table smoothly revolves on the tripod base. In addition to the more common early wood designs we associate with the Grosfeld era he also created custom pieces incorporating metal. This table, along with several chairs only known from archival photos, used metal tripod bases. These designs were the genesis of the tri-symmetric series he created in 1958. These early designs for Grosfeld House using the steel tripod bases were very difficult to make and were not feasible for mass production. It is unknown if any of this series actually went into production at all. In 1958 his casting innovation and increased production facilities would allow him to mass produce the tri-symmetric series.
It is believed few, if any of these early designs survived. This is the only piece using this early tri-pod base that has come to market. Marked on the base is design information in handwriting. The piece is structurally excellent with the base being uniform and balanced and the rotation being silent and smooth. The Vladimir Kagan Design Group has authenticated this piece and it is the first time they have encountered a piece from the series outside of photo archives with the steel base..
