Rare Vintage Dean's Rag Book Ivy & Brumas Polar Bear Teddy Bears W/ Labels C. This gorgeous pair is based on London Zoos polar bear Ivy, who gave birth to Brumas, the first polar bear cub successfully born in captivity. Hard to find the two together. Ivy has white mohair fur, amber and black plastic eyes, stitched mouth, plastic nose, dark brown claw stitching, Deans label to bottom. Brumas has wool plush fur, felt pads, amber and black plastic eyes and stitched nose and mouth. Brumas is still stitched on to Ivy so that they cannot be separated. Overall good condition with some wear- Ivy has a hole to the back of one paw and loose claw stitching to two paws. Small hole to one foot where wire frame is poking through. Some scratches to eyes and only one eye has felt surround. Minor stitched repair to seam at bottom. Some yellow marks to fur and some mohair loss although generally good coverage. Brumas has some yellow marks to fur and the colour has faded on his pupils. Both with some discolouration to fur overall.

Extract from the V&A Collections website. Ivy and Brumas were polar bears at London Zoo. Brumas was born 27 November 1949 and Ivy was her mother.

Brumas was named after her keepers Bruce and Sam (whose name was reversed). Although Brumas was female, the press reported that the bear was a he so the public thought that the cub was male, a belief that is still widespread. Brumas was the first baby polar bear to be successfully reared in Britain and was an immediate attraction with the public. She caused such interest that, in 1950, the Zoo's annual attendance figures reached the 3 million mark.

Brumas died on 17 May 1958. Both bears proved a popular merchandise resource and were celebrated in newsreels, books, postcards, toys and other souvenirs. Dean's Rag Book Company were granted the licence to produce soft toy versions of the bears.
