Up for sale is this rare large leather bound 1678 copy of "The History of the Civil Wars of France" by A. The book is a nice large volume; it measures approximately 13.25 inches by 8 inches and is 734 pages long.
The covers have some wear as seen in the photos. The covers are attached to the binding but the joints are cracked and a bit fragile. The bottom binding string attaching the front cover to the binding is broken.
The other binding strings appear to be intact, but some of them look a bit weakened and the book should be handled with care. There is some old glue residue between the two front blank flyleaves. A spot of the first blank flyleaf is adhered to the front cover by the spine as seen in the 9th photo (the dark spot about halfway up the height of the book). A few inches of the flyleaf in front of the title page is torn by the spine and partially unattached to the binding by a few inches (shown in 1st photo). There are a couple of small spots of sticky residue at the bottom of the spine maybe from some kind of resin type material?
Quite a few pages have some staining/areas of tanning in the margin by the spine (some examples of which are shown in the photos 1, 4, 5 & 6) and there is some wrinkling to the pages. When I was going through the pages I noticed some printing errors with some page numbers. There are 2 pages numbered 417, however they have different text and the page content is right.
Also, the pages go from 296 to 397, 398, 399 and back to 300 and 696 goes to 797,798 and then back to 699, but again, there are no missing pages and the page content is right. The last word at the bottom of each page which were put there as a marker for the book binder are all the first words on the consecutive pages & the sentences flow. The back flyleaf is a bit wrinkled and the last page of the table has a creased page corner. Along with that there is the occasional page with some foxing and other mild staining (not counting the staining in the margins mentioned earlier), small hole, etc. There may also be the occasional page with a small tear or chip or some other minor imperfection that comes with a book this age.
I've done my best to accurately describe the book, though there might be something I may have missed, so please look at all the photos to further note the condition and feel free to message me with any questions you might have.
