Rare Incunable 1489'Sermones Discipuli.. Sermones Discipuli De Tempore Et De Sanctis Cum Promptuario Exemplorum Et Miraculis Beatae Mariae Virginis.

Strassburg: [Martin Flach, Printer Of Strassburg]. Folio [12.50 tall x 9.00 wide x 3.50 thick]. Printed in Flachs type 275g & 80g. The first four lines of sig. D1 are quite characteristic and fit only with the edition of 1489 [Hain 8497].

See British Library letters accompanying the book. 422 leaves [of 430, lacking initial quire A, title and tables]. Double column, 53 lines plus headline, gothic type. Five polychromatic scrollwork initials to leaves d1, F4, M2, U3 & gg8. Decorative initials in blue or red bodycolour around printed guide letters throughout.

Rubricated capitals, later leather thumb-tags tipped to fore-edges of six leaves. Intermittent shallow water marks to margins in the odd place.

A handful of small blemishes, small tears or paper spots/marks. Occasional early marginalia in the odd place, manuscript collation to rear binders blank. 5 letters dated 1960 accompanying the book. Four are from the British Museum confirming their research into the edition we have here and a further letter from Deutsche Staatsbibliothek. Overall a rather nice copy of this very early work.

Johann Herolt, also known as Discipulus (died August 1468) was a Dominican preacher. Herolt has been described as "the most prolific, skillful, and honored writer of sermon books in fifteenth-century Europe". He was "one of the leading figures of a new Dominican spirituality in fifteenth-century Germany which emphasized the practical goals of pastoral work over mystical study". As lector and prior of the Dominican monastery in Nuremberg, Herolt was a colleague of Johannes Nider.

Herolt was also vicar of Nuremberg's Dominican convent, the cloister of St Katharine, which he and Nider reformed in 1428, appointing Gertrud Gwichtmacherin as prioress. He was prior at Nuremberg from 1437 to 1443. Herolt's Sermones discipuli de tempore et de sanctis was the most widely reprinted sermon collection of the fifteenth century. Herolt collected exemplary stories for use in sermons, and these story collections - one thematic, one of miracles of the Virgin Mary, and one of miracles of the saints - also circulated in manuscript and were widely reprinted as Promptuaria exemplorum.

Herolt's Advent, Christmas and New Year sermons to the Nuremberg convent in 1436 - his only work in the German vernacular, Der Rosengart - have recently been translated and published. Morocco backed marbled boards, slightly rubbed [mainly to the lowers edges] else a sound binding.
