Rare Deans Rag Book Doll. This rare Deans character doll was made for around 1 year only in 1936. He was based on a character called Sam from "Pick oop tha Musket" ; a film of 1935 and came from a time when Dean's were trying to produce a toy of every cartoon character available in the hope that something would prove as popular and profitable as Mickey Mouse whom Dean's had the original licence for.
Unfortunately it wasn't Sam who was only around for a year and hence relatively rare. He features prominently in Neil Miller's Dean's Of Yesterday book (pages 113/114).Sam measures 10.5 which was the smallest of 3 sizes produced. He has a moulded face with painted features, felt tunic, jacket and hat, velveteen trousers and shoes all in excellent condition. He has cloth labels to both feet and tiny remains of the Dean's hang tag around his right wrist.
His hat is different to the one featured in Neil Miller's book but it is stitched on and appears to be original. He also doesn't have a musket like the one featured in the book but the catalogue photo doesn't have one either. Overall a wonderful rare character in great original condition.
