RARE BOOK SET Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences 16 Volumes

  

This is a rare set of 16 volumes of Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences, Scranton, Pennsylvania. The books were written by Mary Brooks Picken. She was born in Kansas in 1886 and in 1916 opened the Woman's Institute in Scranton, Pa. The institute combined correspondence courses with actual classroom instruction.

Picken was also the first woman trustee of FIT Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City as well as one of the 5 original directors of the Costume Institute, now part of the Metropolitan Museum of art, also in New York City. Mary Brooks Picken wrote almost 100 books on sewing, dressmaking, needle arts, fashion and also wrote the first Singer Sewing Book.

She died in a nursing home in Williamsport, Pa at the age of 94. This rare set of 16 books were copyrighted in Great Britain and printed in the United States. Here are a list of the titles. Some of the books were printed in the late 20s; others around 1930 and 1931.
