Rare Antique Latin Book 1658 D. Bernardi ac Primi Abbatis Clareualensis
Extremely rare 16th century Latin edition of the second volume of the works of Bernard de Clairvaux. Director of conscience and important promoter of the Cistercian order (or order of Cîteaux), he sought the love of Christ through the harshest mortification. Bernard de Fontaine demonstrated, throughout his life, tireless activity to instruct his monks of Clairvaux, to move and attract the crowds, to ally his order with the papacy and to "elaborate a militant dogma" that his order and all the Catholic Church will implement. He was also a conservative, who criticised the changes of his time, the "Renaissance of the 12th century", marked by a profound transformation of the economy, society and political power. Bernardi ac primi abbatis clareualensis coenobii operum - 1568 - Tomus secundus. Good condition of the binding, work in its full brown leather, rubbing from use, upper right joint cracked on 2cm, rubbed corners, smooth decorated spine, gilt titling on morocco piece.
