Rare Antique Cambridge Wide Margin Holy Bible, KJV, Pearl 8vo References, c1905

  
A rare and unusual find antique book. Containing the old and new testaments. Translated out of the original tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by His Majestys Special Command. Clay at the Cambridge University Press, London. Described on Title Page as Wide Margin, however the margin is the widest we have ever seen!

We have never seen an antique bible like it, and probably never will again. Likely this is the predecessor to the very popular modern Cambridge Wide Margin Bible. There is no printed published year, however a previous owner inscription on the front first end paper is dated 1905.

The book measures around 13cm x 21cm. Please look at all the photos for the best understanding of the condition and contents. There are some signs of age, use and wear.

We cannot confirm the type of leather used for the cover. The cover has noticeable wear, the yapp edges are particularly worn at the corners. There are a few small patches of wear that has gone through the leather, see photos. There is some occasional age/use related page discolouration/creasing dotted throughout, typical with age. A couple of pages have a small tear in the margin outer edge where the book has been thumbed through. All text is clearly legible, however the type is small in proportion the page, leaving plenty of room for the margin! Overall contents binding appears strong, tight and complete. However a significant slant has developed, causing the text block to lean and shift naturally to the left. When coaxed the text block will shift back to its original position, leaving the potential for rectifying the slant in a rebinding opportunity. Other than the previous owner inscription on the front end paper there appears to be no other notes written in the contents.

The page edges are gold gilded, some wear and scratching to the gilding noticeable. Overall remains in functional reading condition. A rare and interesting early example of a wide margin version, appealing to bible collectors or book rebinders looking to preserve this edition. Please do expect signs of age, use and wear.
