Up for sale is this rare 1st edition second state copy of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This copy meets the following points. Publisher's name GEORGE M. " stamped in red at foot of spine in a serif font with the "o" of "Co.

" within the "C; advertisements on p. [2] without border; colophon on back pastedown without border or ornament and printed in 13 lines in black only; broken type in last lines of p. Having tails that are on a line with the rest of the printing. Plates in Greene & Hanff's second state: The color plates are the same as those of the first state except that the dark-blue blots have been removed from the moon on the plate facing page 34 and the red shading on the horizon has been removed from the plate facing page 92. Pictorial self-endpapers; the front paste-down endpaper is in black and gray, the back paste-down endpaper is black and red. The pages facing the pastedowns are blank. The engravings were made by the Illinois Engraving Company, the paper was supplied by the Dwight Brothers Paper Company, and Messrs. Barnes & Company printed the book for the publishers, the George M. Hill Company, completing it on the fifteenth day of May, in the year nineteen hundred--Colophon. The covers are pretty nice in comparison with some of the other examples out there.

They have some minor wear as illustrated in the photos. The interior hinges are cracked as illustrated in the 11th photo. The back part of the text block has been re-adhered to the binding with professional grade acid free archival adhesive.

Some gutter gaps have been neatly repaired and 2 plates have also been neatly re-adhered to the binding. This copy has 22 of the 24 plates called for (including the title page), so it lacks 2 of the plates. The pages are fairly clean though there is the occasional smudge or minor stain or other minor imperfection like a creased page corner, slight wrinkle or minor tear. 2 of the plates have rather heavy wear as illustrated in the 9th photo. The plate with the tiger falling has paper loss by the bottom corner and bottom outer side margin.

There are some internal cracks to the binding, the worst 2 illustrated in the 10th photo. The binding has some play to it, but it is holding. Some of the plates are partially unattached by a few inches.

Some of the plates have some tears or chips to the margin, the one of Dorothy and the Scarecrow meeting the Tinman has a tear at the top of the page that goes into the picture a little bit as seen in the 6th photo. The chapter title page to chapter 4 has a 2 inch tear to it.

I've tried my best to accurately describe the book; more photos are available upon request. Please look at the photos and use the zoom option to further note the condition and message me with any questions you might have.
