A Very Rare to find original early 19th Century French Napoleonic Prisoner of War. Book shaped Straw work Box with hand made hinged lid and internal faded mirror and with two compartments in the base. Hand marbled paper edges resemble the marbling on book page edges. On top is a straw work image, most likely of the Prison where he was held captive and on the base is a different view of the Prison buildings. Good condition for age with fading to the straw work colours and losses gained time as you. Would expect from a box of this age. However the underside colours have remained vibrant. As it would have laid on a table, face down and thus out of direct sunlight. This is the most interesting Napoleonic period Straw Work box I have seen and is very charming! An important example which deserves Museum inclusion. Size: 6 1/4" long x 4" wide x 2 deep.
