As interest in the power of the unconscious grew during the mid-century, so did the popularity and influence of Bellmer's work. Characteristics of his art have been summarized as marked by. Eros, duality, metamorphosis and abstraction.

Of his own work, Bellmer said, What is at stake here is a totally new unity of form, meaning and feeling: language-images that cannot simply be thought up or written up. They constitute new, multifaceted objects, resembling polyplanes made of mirrors. As if the illogical was relaxation, as if laughter was permitted while thinking, as if error was a way and chance, a proof of eternity.

Hans Bellmer was born on March 13, 1902 in Kattowitz, Germany, in what is now Poland and died on February 23, 1975 in Paris, France at the age of 72. He spent the majority of his life and career in Paris. When Hitler came to power, the artist.

Engaged in a subversive process that aimed to undermine the myth of anatomical perfection extolled by the Third Reich. He also aided the French Resistance during WWII by making fake passports.

He was imprisoned in the Camp des Milles at Aix-en-Provenance, a brickwork camp for German nationals, from September 1930 until may 1940. His legacy and sphere of influence. Has been compared to northern European classicists Albrecht Dürer and Matthias Grünewald, among others. Bellmers price index has naturally followed the general increase that Surrealism has enjoyed.
