Offered for your review and consideration is this very early and very rare, early 18th century leather bound volume from a larger set by the French scholar Charles Rollins (in English, translated from the French)'The Ancient History Of The Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes & Persians, Macedonians & Grecians,' dated 1737, published by John and Paul Knapton, London, England. The volume is bound in leather and still has an unbroken and still fairly intact leather spine.
The front and back leather covers show evidence of leather loss, that's been hand-colored and filled in with color to disguise this loss. The pages are cotton pulp paper pages, with the front inset page being printed with red and black ink. The text type is woodblock set. The various, profuse, large fold-out copper plate engraved illustrations of fortifications, battlements & archaic armaments are by and large well preserved, with only two showing any loss and another being torn. Nearly 300 years old, this volume is from a fine North Shore, Massachusetts estate and was not found with the other volumes from the set it originally belonged to. However, it's still a very rare and early antique illustrated book on militaria from the early 18th century, that's in what would have to be considered to be still remarkable overall antique condition, with limited loss and with its original leather binding and covers largely intact. This is a single volume and in particular,'Volume Eleven, Part Two,' from that coveted, highly regarded and highly sought after series of illustrated, early archaic militaria, with its highly accomplished depictions of archaic fortifications, armaments & battlements. NOTE: All the fold-out engravings are not numbered as a page. Most of the large engraved illustrations are still in good to very good overall antique condition being mindful that this individual volume is nearly 300 years old. There's just some minor foxing, wear & episodes of (filled-in & colored) leather loss on the volume's cover, creases and slight tears due to its age & history. The 2 fold-out engravings located and found between pages 36-37 & 38-39, appears to have been cut down or missing. The engraving between pages 92-93, is partially torn. Please review all the attached photos down below for detailed condition and photographic representation of the volume's condition, illustrations & text quality. This volume is leather bound and contains woodblock printed text on cotton pulp paper pages. Fair to Good overall antique condition. Please scroll down to view enlarged photos below.
