"Ole Rabbit's Plantation Stories as Told Among the Negroes of the Southwest" by Mary Alicia Owen. First edition, published in 1898 by George W. An outstanding collection of African American folklore collected from original sources.

The author came from a family of Missouri slave owners and at an early age became interested in the stories the slaves told. The introduction is by folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland, who points out the influence of Native American stories. About 6" x 8", 310 pages, hardcover, illustrated.

The cover has wear but the yellow is still relatively bright. The cover is just beginning to detach at the front as shown. A few pages (that are shown) have mild staining but otherwise lightly tanned and are still supple.
