Very rare work from 1526 , with letters from four Popes. Johannes Cochlaeus - (Novem) Epistolae Decretales Veteru(m) Pontificum Romanoru(m), Longe ante Nicenum Concilium Promulgatae, a sanctis martyribus Christi , saeuiente adhuc Imperatorum persecutione. Stephani I - Epistolae II. Sixti II - Epistolae II. 18 leaves, (35 pages), modern wrappers. Titlepage with woodcut borders, title and a few margins with contemporary handwritten notes in ink - Dim. 20,7 x 15,2 cm - Blank upper right margin of last 5 leaves damaged , last leaf repaired - otherwise in excellent condition! The work contains letters by the popes Fabian (236-250), Cornelius (251-253), Stephen I (254-257) and Sextus (257-258).

The BSB (VD 16 C 4307) quotes this work as printed by Ulrich Morhart der Ältere from Tübingen. The dedicatory letter on verso of title-page by Vuendelstinus is dated, Francofordia, Quarto Idus Apriles, Anno a Natali d(ome)nico 1526. Wendelstinus / Vuendelstinus, was born in Wendelstein near Nuremburg.

He studied at the University of Cologne and became headmaster in Nuremburg where he published several school manuals. He stayed some time in Rome and was ordained there. As he was opposed to Luther , he was forced to leave frankfurt and went to Cologne and later Breslau. Cochlaeus was a profilic and polemic author , who was not trusted by the Catholic church because of his Humanisme, but neither by the Protestants because of his polemic style.
