Original Illuminated Manuscript Book of Hours Leaf, France (Rouen), c. The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth. IM-11894: An original leaf from an illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 25 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin in angular gothic book-hand script on animal vellum.

This leaf measures 160 x 115 mm (6 1/4 x 4 1/2). ONE TWO-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIAL IN BLUE AND WHITE WITH A FLORAL INTERIOR ON A GOLD GROUND; FIFTEEN ONE-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIALS AND EIGHT ILLUMINATED LINE-EXTENDERS IN GOLD ON A RED OR BLUE GROUND. UNUSUAL VIBRANT AND ELABORATE PANEL BORDERS ON RECTO AND VERSO IN A COLORFUL FLORAL MOTIF AND GEMSTONE MOTIF ON A GOLD OR RED GROUND. Style and execution of the miniature paintings in the parent manuscript are closely related to the Master of the Geneva Latini (see Walter 224 & 233 for examples).

This Book of Hours leaf was scribed in France: Rouen (Use of Rouen), c. This is an original more than 500 years old, not a reproduction, and its condition is excellent, as shown in the photos. It is in outstanding condition considering the age and devotional use. The colors and gold ave very fresh and bright, and the leaf is exceptionally clean. An amazing leaf - The border motif and color combination on the verso is very rare, including the representation of three medieval jewels with pearls and gemstone.

This leaf contains a portion of two psalms. The one-line illuminated C begins Psalm 39 (King James 40): 15-18: Confundantur (Let them be confounded and ashamed together that seek after my soul to take it awayThou art my helper and my protector: O my God, be not slack). The two-line illuminated B begins Psalm 40 (KJ 41) 1-11: Beatus Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the evil day. The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.
