C1670-1750s HOLY BIBLE New Testament GERMAN Pennsylvania ANTIQUE Woodcuts RARE
Unknown New Testament (or possibly part of a whole Heilige Schrift, or Holy Bible), in German and with beautiful woodcuts throughout in the fashion of Bernard Salomon. Leather spine with raised bands retained, lacks boards. Text begins at Matthew Chapter 9, and ends at the first page of Register following the end of Revelation. Last 30 or so pages of the Bible are ragged with much edge losses, whole book rounded with some browning throughout, as well as some staining, edgewear and closed tears; inkings to the pastedowns of fraktur birds, possibly indicating early Pennsylvanian ownership.
Counted 780 pages until end of Testament, with winged cupid head device at the end. Gatherings signed in 8s, ending at Ccc8. Printing certainly looks 17th century or earlier. Measures 6.25" x 4.5" x 2.5.
