Rare first edition, very difficult to find. Small section torn away from outer margin of p. Bookplate of Marquess of Headfort to front pastedown. Contemporary straight-grain morocco, spine gilt, rubbed. Pages moderately toned with intermittent light foxing and occasional offsetting.

Boards moderately rubbed and worn, joints worn and tender but binding secure. Hill was a surgeon of Chester and was one of the first to mention syphilitic lunatics. The section relating to the detection of pretenders to madness would seem to refer to observations made on malingering soldiers at the Chester garrison. One of my favorite sellers.
