Antique French Faience CHAUFERRETTE, Desvres Book shaped Hand Warmer c1880. This is a rare and unusual antique French Faience CHAUFERRETTE made in the Desvres region of France. The subject matter includes a pottery Hand Warmer in the shape of a Book, with a décor on the front cover of a woman dressed in Breton garb, on the spine of the book is Souvenir , on the back cover a brightly covered rooster, and Quand ce coq chantera, mon amour finera. When this rooster will sing, my love will end.
There is a hole in the top for a cork. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with bright dark blue, light blue, brilliant lemon yellow, mustard yellow, iron red, sage green, and dark magenta. The estimated date is circa 1880.
