Walnut & Ebony Dogs & Crocodiles. A Pair of Antique Walnut Book Troughs Mounted with Ebony Crocodiles and Dogs.

A rare and stylish pair of walnut book troughs with carved ebony animals dating from the early 20th C. The troughs stand on heavy oblong rectangular plinths with bevelled edges. The troughs are made of solid and heavy slabs of walnut with decorative ebony strips.

Each end is mounted with a matching animal; one trough with two dogs, the other has two crocodiles. The animals are: made of ebony; well and deeply carved with their tails extending up the vertical end plates of the trough. The dogs are finished with little copper eyes. These troughs are of very high quality and are of sound construction. Probably originally designed for a nursery, the wood has been well polished over the years and has a grand patina and deep gleam. There are surface marks to the wood and potential buyers are encouraged to fully peruse the 24 images to assess condition. Dimensions: The baseplates measure 52cm x 16cm. Weight: These are heavy items, the pair weighing 4.1kg's. Condition: In good used antique condition.

The wood is clean well wax polished and with a nice gleam and good patina. There are surface marks/stains relating to age and past use. One crocodile has a small section of wood loss to the tip of its tail.

Very slight separation of a couple of joints has appeared from age related shrinkage. A rare and very stylish pair of antique walnut and ebony bookends that remain functional and are striking on display.
