Title on spine is stamped in gold gilt. Printed on heavy card stock papers. The cult of the tea gown and the cult of chiffon..... It is hard to describe this book. Pritchard had a decidedly strong opinion on women and fashion, believing every woman had a duty to be beautiful and well dressed, regardless of her income. Of course, the book was written with the wealthy woman in mind, lavishing herself in French lingerie of silks and laces, greeting her guest in extravagant tea gowns of layers of chiffons and laces... Going out in elegant cloaks of silk velvets and rare furs......Never leaving the house without a hat from a Rue de la Paix milliner of Paris.... Every detail of milady's toilette is covered.... Her beauty routine, her boudoir, her underclothing, deshabille (undress or lounging attire), corsets, hosiery, shoes and boots... You really have to read this to "get" her attitude about clothing.
The title of the book, "Cult of Chiffon" was a tongue in cheek reference to the rich women who wore layers of silk chiffons from morning to night, and they considered it their right and duty to do so. From the Demi-Monde to the respectable married lady, the Cult Of Chiffon was more than a fashion trend, it was an entire lifestyle. Put this on your wish list! There are some beautiful advertisements in the book, front and back, for upscale designers and Haute Couture dressmakers such as Paquin and milliners to Queen Alexandra, and more.
