Every photo is accompanied by descriptive captions written to inform the reader and at the same time evoke the history and romance of the Emerald Isle. IRELAND IN PICTURES was inspired by Ireland's great centennial celebration of the Rebellion of 1798, as the publishers explain in the Preface. In the summer of 1898, Ireland celebrated the Centennial Anniversary of her latest great uprising in arms against the English power. That revolt, known in history as the Rebellion of 1798, gave her fifty battlefields and a legion of heroes and martyrs whose memory is kept green by the tears their country has dropped upon their graves. In view of the recent celebration of that struggle and of the regrettable fact and that Ireland's scenic, historic and romantic story has never yet been presented to the American public in a popular and attractive form, the J.
