Rebecca and Rowena a Romance Upon Romance by Mr. Titmarsh (William Makepeace Thackeray) published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1850.

Rebecca and Rowena from Victorian author William Makepeace Theckaray, writing under the pseudonym'Mr. Titmarsh' is a romantic novel published in 1850, considered to be a parody/spoof sequel of Walter Scott's Ivanhoe.

In an irreverent and theatrical plot, in which the dead come back to life, marriage is exposed as really quite dull, and imperialism is mocked mercilessly, Thackeray calls into question the ending of Ivanhoe, explores the miserable marriage of Sir Wilfrid to the "icy, faultless, prim" and reunites Ivanhoe with his first love, Rebecca, claiming they were wrongly separated in the earlier novel. William Makepeace Thackeray is one of the great figures of nineteenth century English literature and was one of the first writers to use literature as a means of social commentary. His writings, from the early satires and parodies through the mature historical and realistic fictions, critique the position of women in the Victorian era and give us a panoramic portrait of English society. This rare book is a great read for anyone interested in analyzing the role of the Victorian novel in the history of the women's movement.
