DESCRIPTION: This wonderful scarce and impressive oversized 2-volume set features the art and sketches of artists such as Forbes, Waud, Beard, Becker, Lovie, Schell, and many other first-hand witnessess to the details of the war. This edition was released in 1893 in conjunction with the Chicago World's Fair (Columbian Exposition) and it is therefore referred to as the "Columbian Edition". It was published in 1893 in New York by Stanley Bradley Pub. Co, and was edited by Paul Mottelay.
The books feature a detailed narrative of hundreds of articles and essays which are supplemented by literally hundreds of illustrations, portraits, engravings, and photographs depicting the Union Soldiers and Confederate soldiers..... Showing their life, military surroundings, and work/experiences as soldiers.Both volumes are very good condition for their age and the hardcover bindings are tight and secure which can be unusual for antique books. The books are complete with all pages. Volume 1 has 474 pages and Volume II has 444 pages. Each page is profusely illustrated throughout, with HUNDREDS OF GREAT ENGRAVINGS in a wide variety of sizes. Book size is quite large, measuring 17" x 13". I can't do full justice in describing the contents of this set here, but YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. A perfect gift for the Civil War enthusiast.
