Up for sale is this great antique 1841 leather bound copy of Nathaniel Bowditch's The New American Navigator: Being an Epitome of Navigation; Containing all the Tables of Necessary to be Used with the Nautical Almanac in Determining the Latitude, and the Longitude by Lunar Observations and Keeping a Complete Reckoning at Sea; Illustrated by Proper Rules and Examples: The Whole Exemplified in a Journal, Kept from Boston to Madeira, In Which all the Rules of Navigation are Introduced: Also, the Demonstration of the Usual Rules of Trigonometry; Problems in Mensuration, Surveying, and Gauging; Dictionary of Sea Terms; and the Manner of Performing the Most Useful Evolutions at Sea: With an Appendix, Containing Methods of Calculating Eclipses of the Sun and the Moon, and Occultations of the Fixed Stars; Rules of Finding the Longitude of a Place by Observations of Eclipses, Occultations, and Transits of the Moon's Limb Over the Meridian; Also a New Method for Finding the Latitude by Two Altitudes. The book is overall in good condition. It is illustrated with 12 plates which includes a frontispiece folding map.

There is a printing error where there is no plate 10, instead plate 9 is repeated where plate 10 is supposed to be. The covers have some wear as illustrated in the photos, most noticeably a small section (about 2 inches) of cracking to the upper part of the front leather joint. However, the binding is good and strong. The pages have some foxing, some pages more so than other.

Along with that some pages may have some small tears or chips, creased page corners, wrinkling or some other small imperfection that comes with a book this age. All in all scarce antique leather bound American book on Navigation.
