ENGLISH FRIENDSHIP and SCRAP ALBUM. Here is the personal volume of a well-to-do English lady, elegantly decorated with nearly 100 sides of incredible content. Pasted within it's pages are many early chromolithographic illustrations, floral die cuts, engravings and cutouts, a handful of very fine pencil sketches (some on embossed / perforated cards), and about 70 individual preserved specimens of oceanic moss and seaside ferns. Includes 64 multi-colored paper leaves (128 sides) in light blue, pale yellow, white, natural brown, and soft pink.

Most sides decorated, with a few blank sides sparsely arranged throughout. Contains many pages of brilliant poetry, verse and prose from a handful of contibutors. Earliest entry dated to the 9th of April, 1855; latest entry dated 23rd July, 1863.

Marked locations include London and Islington. Volume fully bound in beautiful tooled leather with floral scrolling. Published by Wm & Hy Rock, London. No indication of original owner, although a few entries are signed by members of the Grimsey family, which may indicate ties to ownership.

This album was assembled by a very skilled hand, and stands as a superior example of 19th century aesthetic and tradition. The collecting and preserving of sea moss specimens for album display became a very popular past-time during the Victorian era, especially for young ladies.

It not only allowed an individual to connect with the natural world on a personal level, but also served as a revered social achievement (considering the skill that was involved in collecting, pressing, preserving and arranging the specimens). This album is undoubtedly one of the finest examples I have seen of it's kind. Measures approximately 9" x 7.5" inches (x 1.5). FOR MORE QUALITY ALBUMS PLEASE CHECK MY OTHER LISTINGS!
