German Hertwig Ice Skaters C 1900. These are the original turn-of-the-century Hertwig pieces. They are nearly impossible to find - probably because they all broke! This pair gets the top what were they thinking? They are attached to their "frozen ice block" bases by a little wood peg which extends out of the foot and fits into a hole in the base. This is nice in that we know by the pegs these are the originals, but it leaves them a bit vulnerable.
Which explains why they are so rare. Wonderful treasures, especially found together as a pair.
Listed in the Mary Morrison Snow Baby book on p. Quality bisque by a fine German maker, they are beautifully modeled and painted, with wonderful movement, arms and legs away (which involves several molds and is labor intensive). The modeling gives a wonderful sense of speed as we imagine them zipping around the ice.
The paint is fired on (not cold painted). They are wearing Victorian spats, with the little buttons up the side of the leg. Best of all, their sweaters and big pom-pom hats are covered in crushed bisque snow.Condition- When we found these they had poorly glued repairs, but luckily all the original parts were present. They have been professionally restored (which was expensive) and are now display ready and good as new; the repairs are invisible, but I marked two photos with an arrow so you can see where the legs were reattached, one on each, the girl's attached under the skirt, and the boy at the knee.
Also repair to a chip on her skate and a tiny chip on his mitten. Part of his wood peg is broken off. I would recommend using museum putty to secure these to their stands. It's removable and does no damage. Remarkably clean because it was glazed and fired, this was not the case with many of the snow babies of the time and is a sign of a high quality snow baby.
Their bases are each marked under-foot with impressed letters; when assembling, note that the girl fits into the base marked with the letter M. In the background of some of the photos, you will see a German bisque snow boy on a wood sled - he is also listed for sale. Photos taken with daylight bulbs for accurate color, though monitor colors may vary. Terms of Sale - Please read.
