Antique French sports magazine La Vie Illustre dated May 24, 1901. African-American World Champion cyclist Major Taylor. Covers his first race vs. French national champion Edmond Jacquelin. Parc des Princes velodrome in Paris, France.

There are two pages with some wonderful pictures from the track before the race. This race was eagerly anticipated by French cycling fans and a huge crowd turned out for the event. Has some great period ads including Peugeot bicycles and. Cameras and has protected the white "inner" cover.

There are 8 pages total not including the outer cover. Pages are clean and bright.

There is some toning from age as well as corner. The outer cover shows wear and soiling.

The staples and is barely attached. There is a crease at the center from where the magazine was folded long ago. Overall it is in nice condition for a 118 year old paper.

The rest of the magazine is devoted to other recreational activities such as theatre and horseback riding. This magazine is suitable for framing and is a great piece of bicycle racing history. Fifty years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, Major Taylor overcame great odds to become the first African-American World Champion in any sport.
