59 SPENCERIAN DRAWINGS 4 RARE Samples by LOUIS MADARASZ 1859-1910 Autograph Book    59 SPENCERIAN DRAWINGS 4 RARE Samples by LOUIS MADARASZ 1859-1910 Autograph Book
Autograph book with 59 Spencerian Calligraphy drawings; most notably 4 samples by the famous 19th century penman Louis Madarasz, 1859 - 1910, "the most highly skilled ornamental penman that ever lived, " to quote one source. There are also samples by the famous penmen: William E. Ames 1835 - 1909, H. The first 4 pics are Madarasz's penmanship, two are dated 1879, 2 have little cutout photos of him glued on the page showing a very young college age Louis, around 20 years old. These photos of him are nowhere online, those that are online of him show him an older gentleman. This makes these especially rare, early samples and photos of the legendary penman. Wo of his samples are (1) on a pink paper and (1) on a business type card then glued onto the pages, the two bird samples, one done "hasitly" notes Madarasz, are executed directly into the book. All the examples by these famous penmen are early examples of their work, if you look at when they lived and the dates in the book are all either 1878 and 1879.

The 5th picture are both samples by H. Total samples are 3 - 1 of a quill, 1 of script only, and 1 bird. He was a noted penman and author and was enlisted in the Civil War as a boy.

6th picture are 2 samples by someone signed Ames; most probably Daniel T. Samples online are closely relational to these. He wrote Ames Guide to Self Instruction in Practical and Artistic Penmanship. I could not find him online but his work is every bit as good as those I did find. 8th pic: an exquisite bird's nest by N.

Luce with a Yours Truly N. June 1879 in very fancy, sweeping, accomplished script on the opposite page. I could not find him online, but he should be. 9th pic are by H.

Clark, an early 20th century biography online cited him as one of the most skilled penmen in the U. There are 3 total samples in the book by this penman: 2 birds and 1 very fancy script. 10th pic is a swan by William E. There is also another sample by this famous penman of fancy script. Mussleman, I found online he ran a business college, probably in Gem City which is noted on his drawings.

Nothing else on him but there are 4 exquisite samples by him in this book. 12th pic by noted penman H. Kibbe shows 2 fantastic bird samples, there is also a short script by him not shown.

Sorry, I could not get the camera to focus on both drawings. Some nice samples by Mr. S Preston, Bearce and Fairchild. There are many other really nice samples of autographs, text only, and birds that I don't have room to show. No other animals other than birds and a swan or two.

This little book got around, drawings are noted from: Quincy Ill, Rochester NY, Philadelphia, 205 Broadway NY, ? Ferry Penna, Boston Mass, Baltimore MD, Deadwood Neb (can' find this town) Springville NY, East Bridgewater Mass, 630 Washington St Boston Mass, Union City Pa, Rockford Ill, Brooklyn NY Atlanta GA, Utica NY. Several have business college notations, maybe college is where the owner of this book ran into Madarasz, during his college days.

An online biography says he went to college in Rochester, that is city noted on one of Madarasz's bird drawings. Blodget, who seems to have known quite a few highly skilled penman.

A rare collection of accomplished Spencerian Calligraphy. Book measures 6.5" x 4".

From my father's 60 year collections, we don't know where it got it. As stated in the condition report, the boards of the book are warped; if you would like a picture of the outside of the autograph book please message me and I'll send you one. I thought it more important to show the drawings. The item "59 SPENCERIAN DRAWINGS 4 RARE Samples by LOUIS MADARASZ 1859-1910 Autograph Book" is in sale since Monday, March 05, 2018.
