A fascinating read and a must have in your fashion library. If you know of this book, I need go no further in it's description. You know this is THE undeniable queen of rare books on antique fashion.Title is The Cult Of Chiffon. Illustrated throughout with charming full page and smaller line drawings of beautiful women in Belle Epoque and The Opulent Era and fashion, dresses, corsets, lingerie, deshabille, tea gowns, riding attire and sportswear, opera gowns and ball gowns, jewelry, accessories of dress, millinery and hats, and more.... Illustrated by Rose Le Quesne. Published by Grant Richards, London. Hard Cover is an attractivecream faux leather. Orignal red ribbon remain, black ribbon ties not attatched but present. Title on spine is stamped in gold gilt. Printed on heavy card stock papers. The cult of the tea gown and the cult of chiffon..... It is hard to describe this book. Pritchard had a decidedly strong opinion on women and fashion, believing every woman had a duty to be beautiful and well dressed, regardless of her income. Of course, the book was written with the wealthy woman in mind, lavishing herself in French lingerie of silks and laces, greeting her guest in extravagant tea gowns of layers of chiffons and laces... Going out in elegant cloaks of silk velvets and rare furs......
Never leaving the house without a hat from a Rue de la Paix milliner of Paris.... Every detail of milady's toilette is covered.... Her beauty routine, her boudoir, her underclothing, deshabille (undress or lounging attire), corsets, hosiery, shoes and boots... You really have to read this to "get" her attitude about clothing.
The title of the book, "Cult of Chiffon" was a tongue in cheek reference to the rich women who wore layers of silk chiffons from morning to night, and they considered it their right and duty to do so. From the Demi-Monde to the respectable married lady, the Cult Of Chiffon was more than a fashion trend, it was an entire lifestyle. Put this on your wish list! There are some beautiful advertisements in the book, front and back, for upscale designers and Haute Couture dressmakers such as Paquin and milliners to Queen Alexandra, and more.
Many references in the book to French and London designers..... PLEASE SEE OUR AUCTIONS FOR MORE ANTIQUE and VINTAGE HATS, Clothing, AND MORE.... PLEASE SEE THE PHOTOS as they serve as part of the condition description.
