Gunn's New Family Physician by John C. Gunn, with anatomy and medical flora illustrations, published in 1869. It measures approximately 7" x 9 ¾" and contains 1046 pages. In the 19th century, a combination of many factors -- including literacy and mass produced paper -- made it possible for Americans to own and use books. Among the more popular genres were the home medical manuals.

At this time, Americans believed that expertise was not limited to physicians so, in essence, anyone could treat and cure illness -- all they needed was information and medicines. Thus, there was a proliferation of these home care books. This enlarged and rewritten version of the domestic medical guide, which first appeared at Knoxville in 1830, became the most successful non-sectarian domestic medical book of its era. It provides: Many Valuable Suggestions for Avoiding Disease and Prolonging Life, with Plain Directions in Cases of Emergency, and Pointing Out in Familiar Language the Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Cure of Diseases Incident to Men, Women and Children, with the Simplest and Best Remedies; Presenting a Manual for Nursing the Sick, and Describing Minutely the Properties and Uses of Hundreds of Well-Known Medicinal Plants.

With Supplementary Treatises on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, on Domestic and Sanitary Economy, and on Physical Culture and Development. This edition, written shortly after the Civil War, was presented with great interest during the time when arts and sciences were being researched and discovered. Concerning medical treatment, it was a time of retrograding. Upon further investigating these matters, reform medical schools were established and Doctors were becoming more dominant.

Gunn's main intent was to provide an invaluable collection of PRACTICAL RECIPES and numerous preparations and CURES that are valuable to families with a rational treatment of Pleurisy, Inflammation of the Lungs, and other Inflammatory Diseases. This also covers GENERAL FEMALE DEBILITY AND IRREGULARITIES.

Gunn accomplishes this as all subjects are arranged in their appropriate departments in a plain and simple manner so that all may comprehend and cure themselves with equal facility. This large thick book has 1,218 pages of information on how to avoid disease and prolong life; the simplest and best remedies for illnesses; the properties and uses of MEDICINAL PLANTS & HERBS ; the symptoms, treatment and cure of diseases; how to nurse the sick; physical culture and development; with supplementary treatises on anatomy, physiology, and hygiene.

It was designed to be a complete guide for families. It is written in simple language, free from medical terms, the diagnosis and treatments of illnesses and diseases in men, women and children. It is contains a guide for avoiding disease and prolonging life, directions for emergency situations, a manual for nursing the sick, with causes, symptoms and treatments for disease. It includes instructions on using medicinal plants, as well as information on anatomy, physiology and hygiene. It is beautifully illustrated with LOTS OF ILLUSTRATIONS!!

This volume was also used by John Steinbeck as a reference while he wrote his famous novel East of Eden. "Steinbeck depended on Gunn for specific contemporary medical information which added verisimilitude to his rendering of 19th Century life, provided a model for honorable aspects of human behavior, " and gave details on pregnancy and midwifery, especially for medical lore and common sense knowledge. Leather cover is pretty good! Scuffing around the edges with a tear at the top right of spine. Gilding on spine is in excellent condition!

Marbled endpapers on inside covers. Binding is cracked starting a few pages in, but rest is sound. Pencil marks on several front pages (most likely from a child). 6.75 x 9.75 x 3.25.
